Coming out of an articleship or internship, with years of studies behind you, can obviously be taxing. Especially when you’ve been paid peanuts in the name of “learning.” Naturally, the very first question on most freshers’ minds is: “Kitna milega?”

In India, the starting salary for an FP&A Analyst or Business Finance fresher typically ranges from INR 7 to 10 lakhs per year. Of course, this will depend on several factors:

  1. Company brand: New companies or startups tend to pay more than established MNCs.
  2. Industry: Internet companies generally pay more than IT companies.
  3. Your personal brand: Having ranks, experience in Big 4s, or better marks can obviously fetch a better price in the market, especially for Finance professionals or CAs within 0-3 years of work experience.

Out of the typical salary range, the cash component usually accounts for about 80-90%. Additionally, you can expect early-stage startups to offer ESOPs with a usual vesting cycle of 4 years.

And if you’re clever enough to negotiate, you might just be able to sweeten the deal with a Joining bonus or a relocation allowance/reimbursement. Sweet, huh!

But wait!!

There have been so many situations, where none of the above factors have also mattered at all. I personally have been in situations with 2 candidates:

➡️ Same number of attempts

➡️ Same articleship firm

➡️ Applied for same jobs

However, the resume & interview experience are miles apart. And what was the turnoff:

❌ One candidate’s resume had a very casual messy design which made it look rudimentary & unprofessional

❌ In his interview, he came out totally unprepared & generic with no mention of his unique skills or why he should be hired above anyone else

❌ When he spoke about himself and his experience, he was full of Irrelevant details which did not add any value.
